Is this Quarter horse/pony worth $1000?

I've been looking for a horse-got a job and worked 2 yrs to buy a horse, and have been looking for about a month now, for a horse that would be right for me, and I found a dealer who sells horses. He has a horse that I really liked, and am wondering if the price he is asking ($1,000) is a fair price? Its a gelding, cross between a quarter horse and a pony, in good shape, trained, just had his hooves trimmed and checked, in good health, smaller than a quarter horse..... They had asked for $750, and then raised the price to $1000, which is why I have this question.... Is he charging a fair price, or is he ripping me off??? I have a brother in law, who I'm hoping can check it out for me as well (he has more background with horses-he was raised with them). I'm not a person who had everything handed to me-I had to work very hard, but I knew that horses are really my thing, and I'm still learning. I need as much help as I can get:)

If he's fully trained and safe, and a good match for you, I think it's a somewhat fair price. You might be able to knock off about $100 with a bit of haggling, though. You might ask why they raised the price- did they get a lot of interested buyers, or did he get some more training under his belt? Also, make sure that he's at an age that you can keep him for a while without having to cut down on the work you want to do. And is he a good height for you, with the skill level that you can handle? I would reccomend taking out your trainer with you to look at the horse- they can safely and un-biasedly asses if the horse is a good match for you. And bring a vet yourself to have a pre-purchase check if you're seriously interested- the previous check might have missed something.

I just caught that he's a horse dealer. Ask some horse friends to see if they know of him, or have bought a horse from him. Is he trustworthy? Is he known to sell high quality horses or does he cheat and scam?
